Anesthesia Mask

Looks like: Clear plastic with balloon edges.
Sounds like: Soft hissing sound.
Feels like: Soft plastic on your face. Some have flavor smells like strawberry or bubblegum.
Things that might bug you: Fits over both your nose and mask.
Bed in Peds Procedure Room
Looks like: Stickers with wires attached (leads). Big band-aid with white wire attached. Blood pressure cuff - a long band that wraps around your arm.
Sounds like: Blood pressure cuff will “hum” when it is filling up with air.
Feels like: The blood pressure cuff gently “hugs” your arm. The pulse ox wraps around your finger like a band-aid with a white wire attached and the “leads” are just really sticky stickers!
Things that might bug you: BP cuff may give your arm a “squeeze” but it just feels like a tight hug. The stickers with the colorful wires feel cool on your skin.
Blood Pressure Cuff
Looks like: A band for your arm or leg.
Sounds like: A gentle, yet snug squeeze when the cuff is working.
Feels like: A low humming.
Things that might bug you: When it tightens around your arm as it expands.
CT SCANNER
Looks like: A big donut with a bed in front of it.
Sounds like: It makes a fast whirring sound like a hair dryer.
Feels like: Lying on a cold table.
Things that might bug you: It is loud and moves very slowly.
Face Mask & Hat
Looks like: A papertowel covering your noise & mouth. The hat looks like a blue hairnet.
Sounds like: The mask can make someone’s voice sound softer.
Feels like: A papertowel covering your face. The hat is soft.
Things that might bug you: It may make it hard to tell who’s talking to you. If you have to wear one, it may feel a little hot.
Heart Monitor Leads
Looks like: A round sticker that sort of looks like an eye.
Sounds like: Nothing, but when it is hooked up to the machine you may hear a beeping noise.
Feels like: Sticky and squooshy.
Things that might bug you: These stickers stick to your skin, and when removed may pull on your skin like a band-aid.
Hospital Bed
Looks like: A regular bed at home except there’s a curtain to divide the room for privacy.
Sounds like: An electric car window going up and down.
Feels like: Your bed at home. It’s also adjustable to raise your head or legs.
Things that might bug you: It might be a little higher than your bed at home, but you can adjust it as you want.
IV Pump
Looks like: A giant calculator on a pole!
Sounds like: It beeps when the medicine runs out to let the nurses know.
Feels like: Nothing.
Things that might bug you: You have to walk around with the pole when it is attached to your IV.
IV Start Kit
Looks like: Gloves, rubber band and syringe with needle attached by a tube.
Sounds like: Nothing!
Feels like: There is a quick pinch when the needle goes in. Once it is in you don’t feel it anymore. It will be taped to your hand when the nurse is done.
Things that might bug you: You will have to walk around with your IV pole.
MRI Machine
Looks like: A tunnel with a bed in front of it.
Sounds like: A loud banging, like shoes in a dryer.
Feels like: Laying on a hard bed.
Things that might bug you: The sound might be loud but they give you earphones with music playing. When the bed slides you in the tunnel, you have to lay really still so the camera can get the best picture!
Pulse Oximeter
Looks like: A clothes pin with a red light on the inside.
Sounds like: Nothing, but when it is hooked up to the machine you may hear a beeping noise.
Feels like: Cushiony, like a little pillow for your finger.
Things that might bug you: It has to stay on your finger and it might get in your way.
Radiation
Looks like: A big cell phone.
Sounds like: Room might have music or you can bring an iPod or CD player.
Feels like: Very cold room and a bed to lay on. The bed may be cold too but you need to lay really still when the machine is on.
Things that might bug you: You won’t be able to move and might be really cold. Make sure to ask for a blanket!
Scale
Looks like: A chair on a scale.
Sounds like: There might be a beeping sound.
Feels like: Sitting on a regular chair.
Things that might bug you: Nothing.
Sedation Medication Pump
Looks like: A small computer “pump” that has the sedation medication (sleepy medicine) in the syringe.
Sounds like: It is usually silent but will beep every once in awhile.
Feels like: Nothing.
Things that might bug you: Nothing, you will be sleeping.
Stethescope
Looks like: Plastic tubing with a round piece of metal on one end and 2 ear pieces on the other end.
Sounds like: No sound.
Feels like: Cold metal on your skin.
Things that might bug you: Might be cold.
Surgery room
Looks like: A big room with lots of machines, but remember, it’s not all for you!
Sounds like: You may hear a lot of beeping and strange alarms.
Feels like: May be chilly, but you can ask for a nice warm blanket.
Things that might bug you: The combination of bright lights and strange sounds.
Tegaderm & Chloroprep
Looks like: A clear sticker and a stick with a sponge.
Sounds like: The sticker doesn’t make any noise, but the stick ‘clicks’ when activated.
Feels like: The sticker is sticky and the sponge is wet and cold.
Things that might bug you: Later when the sticker has to come off it may pull your skin like a band-aid. The stick with sponge smells like rubbing alcohol.
Thermometer
Looks like: A remote control with a shiny wand attaching by a phone cord.
Sounds like: It beeps when it reads your temperature.
Feels like: May feel like you have tape in your mouth because the nurse will wrap the shiny wand part in a protective cover when taking your temperature. Or they can also put the wand under your arm.
Things that might bug you: Might be a little cold on your skin if placed under your arm.
Vitals Monitor
Looks like: TV monitor with wires connected.
Sounds like: Beeps a lot!
Feels like: Nothing.
Things that might bug you: Sometime the beeping can get loud.
X-Ray Table
Looks like: A bed with lights over it.
Sounds like: It is quiet until it takes a picture, then it buzzes!
Feels like: Laying on a hard bed, and you may have to wear a heavy apron to cover up parts of your body.
Things that might bug you: It might be cold in the room, the bed may be a bit hard.
